The guiro is an untuned instrument from South and Central America that is made from a carved gourd that has been notched to create a ridged surface. The guiro is played by scraping the surface with a stick. The cabasa is traditionally a hollowed gourd wrapped in a lattice of nylon cord with plastic beads attached. It produces a loud, high-pitched shaker and rattle sound and is used in African, Latin and Central American music.
